Brief
West Village Partnership is the Business Improvement District serving one of New York City’s most historic and culturally active neighborhoods. Charged with supporting local businesses, public space, and community life, the organization plays a central role in shaping how the West Village is experienced day to day.
Saint-Urbain was commissioned to develop a brand identity and strategic platform that could express the West Village as a living, shared experience. The engagement spanned brand strategy, identity design, copywriting, motion concepts, and environmental applications, resulting in a flexible system designed to function across street-level, digital, and community-facing touchpoints.
Finding
Rather than treating the West Village as a fixed landmark, the work reframes it as something participatory, defined by the people who live, work, and gather there. The identity centers on community as an active verb, inviting presence, interaction, and shared ownership.
Inspired by late-60s and early-70s American vernacular typography, neighborhood ephemera, and the West Village’s irregular street grid, the system combines expressive typography, bold color, and human-centered photography. Messaging such as Together, We Village and Bloom, Play, Village reflects the neighborhood as something lived in and continually shaped through everyday activity.
Designed to scale across campaigns, signage, wayfinding, digital platforms, and motion, the identity avoids institutional tone in favor of warmth, flexibility, and clarity. The result is a place-based system that supports civic function while foregrounding the character, creativity, and participation that define the West Village.
